By Sarah Crosset

Is your young son a fan of all things nature? Why not bring the outdoors inside – right into his bedroom, to be more exact! With a little time and effort, you can recreate some of his favorite nature scenes all in the comfort of his very own room.

Many young boys are fascinated with all types of bugs and other insects. From frogs to bees to reptiles to ants, young boys love the attraction of things that creep and crawl. While you may not welcome the actual critters into your son’s bedroom, you can bring the theme into the room through bed linens and other accent pieces. Look for comforters, sheet sets and other linens that feature various types of bugs or reptiles. Keep in mind that most stores sell accent pieces that coordinate with the linens, such as wall art, lamps and kids rugs. Buying matching items that will help keep your theme continuous throughout the room. Be sure to tell your son that, even with all the pretend bugs in the room, he has to leave the real thing outside!

Many boys are into animals a bit larger than insects. If your son is one of them, you can even create a bedroom design that showcases his favorite type of animal. No matter what kind of animal he loves, from cats and dogs to snakes and birds, with a little effort, you can create a room that makes him – and his pet! – feel comfortable in their own little space. In addition to using bed linens and accent pieces that coordinate with the pet theme, consider framing pictures of your son with his pet and using them as art work for the walls. If your son is young enough to still appreciate stuffed animals, looks for replica animals to represent his favorite pets!

Perhaps your son is into more exotic themes, such as the rain forest. By using colorful jungle colors throughout the room, can bring the rain forest straight to his bedroom. Look for bed linens and accent pieces that feature a jungle theme; there are plenty of kids rugs on the market these days that feature various jungle designs. Consider adding fake branches or leaves on the ceiling to create a true jungle canopy that will keep your son mesmerized for years to come.

If your son likes nature in general, consider doing with a theme of wild colors throughout his room! Begin by selecting a contemporary area rug in colors that reflect your son’s favorite interests in nature and then, using those colors, go wild with accent décor! Use paint to add color to pieces of furniture in the room and look for coordinating fabrics to use for curtains, pillows and other uses throughout the room. As you create the room design, keep in mind that while you do want to use a variety of colors, you want to keep a theme of similar colors throughout the room. Remember, the ultimate goal is to create a room full of wonder that will amaze your son each and every single time he walks into his bedroom.

Design consultant Sarah really enjoys writing about home decorating using nature. And she says that if you are ready for your room to shine then lay bamboo rugs or natural flokati rugs on your floor.
